Does Financial Education Help Lower Stress?

Whether you work at a financial company or not, everyone has to deal with the same financial concerns in their lives. Prudential Financial, one of the world’s largest financial services firms conducted a study on its employees over a 10 year period starting in 2008 regarding this issue.

They found that one in three employees, a staggering 31%, suffered from financial problems, even though they were being offered a comprehensive benefits package, much better than their competitors. To combat this, the company started an initiative to help alleviate the financial stress of their employees by offering financial education in the workplace.

In 2015, Prudential launched Pathways, a workplace financial education program that helps its employees with retirement and other savings needs. In addition, the program offers digital financial education on topics regarding debt management, saving, investing, and retirement planning strategies. Essentially, covering all of the major financial areas that one deals with in their life.

By the end of 2016, after the implementation of all of these various financial wellness measures, the company the saw the percentage of employees experiencing financial stress drop to 16%, falling under the national benchmark of 19%.

“With appropriate measures and with appropriate type of capabilities, you can positively impact financial stress within a workforce,” says Vishal Jain, financial wellness officer of Prudential’s workplace solutions group.
